While you could consider a “best of” list as subjective, these five best science podcasts are part of a definite, objective, absolute, and immutable list. Kidding (sorta), but these are really fantastic podcasts, no matter how you like your world of science to spin. From the mating habits of eels, which alluded scientists for longer than you’d think, to imagined futures made possible by emerging technologies and artificial intelligence, the five best science podcasts listed here offer listeners a smorgasbord of topics to choose from.
That said, if you’re a die-hard techie, you may consider the Accidental Tech Podcast. Or, if you prefer a more star-filled headspace in your universe, then maybe StarTalk with Neil deGrasse Tyson. These five science podcasts aren’t as niche in their topics, but all the pods feature entertaining hosts and intriguing scientific queries. By the end of most episodes produced by these five pods, you’ll be a bit better informed than before – no matter what the topic was. While all unique, each new episode answers science questions, addresses popular science topics, and/or updates listeners on the latest science news.
1. Radiolab
Created in 2000 and led by Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich for years, Radiolab is the OG of science podcasting. Lulu Miller and Latif Nasser now host it, but the podcast didn’t lose a step in terms of entertainment, relatability, or scientific merit. It’s more of a storytelling podcast with keen scientific vigor and scientific experts, and if you’re new to science podcasts, Radiolab is the ideal place to start.
Newbie Recommendation: “Animal Minds”
2. Science Vs
If you like your science with a dash of funny, Science Vs is an informative and entertaining listen. Hosted by Wendy Zukerman, the podcast tackles all types of topics, from the efficacy of hypnosis to the truth about G-spots. Zukerman’s Aussie accent doesn’t hurt, either, and with Wendy, there are no stupid questions among smart people.”Deodorant: Is It Dangerous?” Yeah, is it?
Newbie Recommendation: “100% Renewable Energy – Can We Do It?“

3. Ologies with Alie Ward
A weekly podcast, Ologies is a more long-form pod than Radiolab or Science Vs., but if you like deep dives into different fields of science, then it’s a great listen while you walk your dog or chase your cat. “Ology” refers to the study of something, so whether you want to know more about dreams (oneirology) or toichographology (murals and street art), the Alie Ward-hosted podcast tackles a wide range of interesting topics, or “ologies,” with special guest who are experts in their fields.
Newbie Recommendation: “Funology (YES, FUN) with Catherine Price“

4. Short Wave
Hosted by Emily Kwong and Regina Barber, NPR’s Short Wave is ideal for those who appreciate the ever-evolving intersection between science and technology. As its name suggests, the episodes are short (around 10 minutes), but each segment packs a lot of brain food into the runtime of a snack break. From the future of artificial intelligence in medicine to the impact of social media on the brain (ahem) to the week’s science news, Short Wave goes to long lengths to inform its listenership.
Newbie Recommendation: “Space Junk: How Cluttered Is The Final Frontier?“
5. Unexplainable
This podcast by Vox is suited for those who understand that science is about the known, the unknown, and everything in between. To be clear, this isn’t a conspiracy podcast, as this isn’t a “best conspiracy podcasts” list, but the segments do explore the mysteries and possibilities of science. How can we know what we don’t know if we don’t know to know it? Through in-depth analysis and listening to these five best science podcasts… that’s how.

I love how games like Subway Surfers balance fun with simple mechanics. It’s great for casual play, but always good to remember to play responsibly and take breaks!
